{"id":1195,"date":"2019-01-07T14:07:57","date_gmt":"2019-01-07T14:07:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=1195"},"modified":"2019-01-07T14:07:57","modified_gmt":"2019-01-07T14:07:57","slug":"chirumanzu-farmers-embrace-drought-resistant-crops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/chirumanzu-farmers-embrace-drought-resistant-crops","title":{"rendered":"Chirumanzu farmers embrace drought-resistant crops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>VILLAGERS in drought-prone Chirumanzu district, Midlands province, have switched to drought-resistant crops to shield themselves against hunger as rains have become erratic.<span id=\"more-3096224744010732\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Villagers told NewsDay on Friday that they had ow ditched maize crop upon realisation that erratic rains were affecting their yields.<\/p>\n<p>According to farming experts, Zimbabwe is among countries in southern Africa that need to embrace small grains to avert the impact of climate change-related disasters.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsd-1055494959\" class=\"newsd-2nd-advert-incontent\">\n<p>The country\u2019s marginal areas of the country, particularly natural regions three, four and five, are characterised by high temperatures and erratic rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more prolonged dry spells had us revisiting the need to grow drought-resistant crops such as sorghum and wheat,\u201d a villager, Innocent Dube, said.<\/p>\n<p>Another villager, Felistus Chigumbu, said they had received the first heavy rains, last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Chigumbu said the maize they planted with light rains that fell last year was a write-off as the crop had wilted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe planted the maize crop last December and most of it has wilted,\u201d Chigumbu said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsd-1436540819\" class=\"newsd-2nd-advert-incontent-250\">\n<p>\u201cIt is against such a background that we have now turned to drought-resistant crops in response to climate change and El Nino-induced dry spells.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, farmers in the district had to let loose their cattle on the maize crop that had wilted as a result of the prolonged El Nino-induced dry spell that affected most parts of the country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsd-297103934\" class=\"newsd-ads-links\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; VILLAGERS in drought-prone Chirumanzu district, Midlands province, have switched to drought-resistant crops to shield themselves against hunger as rains have become erratic.
