The outgoing United Nations Resident Coordinator in Zimbabwe, Bishow Parajuli, has condemned the recent abduction and torture of citizens by masked gunmen in the dead of the night across the country.<\/p>\n

Parajuli was speaking to reporters during his last address in Harare<\/a>. He said:<\/p>\n

The constitution provides space for people to participate in a peaceful means of demonstrations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I would say all means of peaceful demonstrations should not be threatened through violent means.<\/p>\n

And that can only add negative image on Zimbabwe, frankly. Zimbabweans are very peaceful people, that is what I have seen, and tolerant people.<\/p>\n

And going to people in the evenings in masks and beating, that is absolutely intolerable. That should not be the right thing to do.<\/p>\n

Parajuli also touched on the issue of sanctions targeted on Zimbabwean individuals and companies considered to be at the forefront of human rights violations.<\/p>\n

He said that sanctions are not the main reason why foreigners shun investing their capital in Zimbabwe but rather, the country\u2019s wrong policies. Said Parajuli:<\/p>\n

If you dissect the element of sanctions, some of the countries with restrictive measures are the largest supporters of Zimbabwe from a humanitarian development point of view. So they care (about) Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

Yes, the perception of sanctions can mislead certain interests in terms of potential but I have seen strong interests coming to invest from some of these countries.<\/p>\n

Not necessarily these restrictions limit investments from these countries. But I think the major challenge in my perception has been wrong policies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
