{"id":15680,"date":"2019-11-07T20:41:30","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T18:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=15680"},"modified":"2019-11-07T20:41:30","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T18:41:30","slug":"mozambique-zimbabwe-and-zambia-owe-eskom-r632m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/mozambique-zimbabwe-and-zambia-owe-eskom-r632m","title":{"rendered":"Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia owe Eskom R632m"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three foreign state-owned power utilities owe Eskom R632m in outstanding payments.<\/p>\n<p>This was revealed in a parliamentary reply by public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan in response to a question posed by the DA.<\/p>\n<p>The party said while Gordhan may be of the view that R632m would have a minimal impact on Eskom\u2019s cash flow, in reality every cent counted when the power utility had debt of about R420bn.<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zesa.co.zw\/\">Zesa<\/a> Holdings) owes Eskom R322m, Electricidade de Mo\u00e7ambique (EDM) owes R221m and Zambian state-owned power company Zesco owes R89m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalf a billion rands is an astonishing amount of money and could, in the long term, go a long way in stabilising the financial woes at Eskom,\u201d said DA chief whip Natasha Mazzone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs such, the DA has written to minister Gordhan to request that he makes public the payment plans that Eskom has with these foreign governments which owe the utility millions in unpaid debt,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said in addition to the R632m owed by these foreign power utilities, Eskom was also owed close to R20bn in outstanding debt by municipalities across South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly Eskom is incapable of collecting debts both at home and abroad. This begs the question: does Eskom actually have plans in place to collect debts owed to it?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf not, the utility will never be able to stabilise its cash flow, and the taxpayer will continue to pay for bailout after bailout,\u201d Mazzone said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three foreign state-owned power utilities owe Eskom R632m in outstanding payments.
