Harare City Council<\/a> has threatened striking nurses over their prolonged industrial action saying it shall inevitably call for disciplinary action.<\/p>\n

The council, Acting Human Capital Director, Matthew Marara released a memorandum on November 20, cautioning nurses that they will not receive their salaries if they continue their industrial action. Marara said:<\/p>\n

I have learnt with sadness that most of these \u2018striking\u2019 nurses have not taken heed of my call. I will reiterate that the action by the absenting nurses is illegal and in terms of Labour Act (Chapter 28:01) and section 108 (4), the employer is not obliged to pay employees not reporting for duty to render services as per their employment contracts.<\/p>\n

The local authority has for weeks now failed to persuade nurses to go back to work thereby leaving patients stranded and at the exposure of private medical practitioners who charge high costs for their services.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, relatively cheap mission health institutions have since revealed that they are now overwhelmed by patients as numbers continued to increase as each day of doctors industrial action passes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
