{"id":163,"date":"2017-12-03T10:25:34","date_gmt":"2017-12-03T10:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=163"},"modified":"2017-12-03T10:28:03","modified_gmt":"2017-12-03T10:28:03","slug":"key-coup-leaders-appointed-zimbabwe-cabinet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/key-coup-leaders-appointed-zimbabwe-cabinet","title":{"rendered":"Key &#8216;coup&#8217; leaders appointed to Zimbabwe cabinet"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"el__leafmedia el__leafmedia--sourced-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\"><cite class=\"el-editorial-source\">Harare, Zimbabwe (CNN)<\/cite>Zimbabwe\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/11\/24\/africa\/mnangagwa-swearing-in-zimbabwe\/index.html\">President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u00a0<\/a>on Friday unveiled a new cabinet in which two senior military officials who played a central role in bringing him to power were given key jobs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">Sibusiso Moyo, the army officer who went on state TV on November 15 to announce the military&#8217;s takeover of power, has been appointed foreign minister, while air force commander Perrance Shiri is the new minister of lands, agriculture and rural resettlement.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">Zimbabwe&#8217;s longtime ruler,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/11\/21\/africa\/robert-mugabe-resigns-zimbabwe-president\/index.html\">Robert Mugabe, stepped down<\/a>\u00a0a week after the military&#8217;s move, allowing his erstwhile Vice President, Mnangagwa, to return from hiding out in South Africa to pick up the reins as interim President a week ago.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The 22 members of the cabinet are all members of the ruling Zanu-PF party, dashing Zimbaweans&#8217; hopes that Mnangagwa might include opposition representatives in his government.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The 75-year-old had promised in his inauguration speech last Friday to reach out to the opposition, and he pledged sweeping reforms and a crackdown on rampant corruption.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/01\/africa\/matabeleland-zimbabwe-mnangagwa\/index.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__image media__image--responsive alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/171127144156-01-matabeleland-medium-plus-169.jpg\" alt=\"For Zimbabwe's new president, a past tainted by a brutal massacre\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"media__caption el__storyelement__title\"><span class=\"el__storyelement__header\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/01\/africa\/matabeleland-zimbabwe-mnangagwa\/index.html\">For Zimbabwe&#8217;s new president, a past tainted by a brutal massacre<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The main opposition MDC-T party has previously raised concerns over what role the military might play ahead of next year&#8217;s election, with Mnangagwa at the helm of the security forces.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Shiri is known to many Zimbabweans as the former commander of the North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade, which played a major role in massacres in western Zimbabwe&#8217;s Matabeleland in the 1980s.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Tens of thousands of civilians are estimated to have been killed in what Mugabe called &#8220;Gukurahundi,&#8221; a word in Shona, the country&#8217;s main language, meaning &#8220;the rain that seeps away the chaff.&#8221; The government&#8217;s stated objective for the operation at the time was to target dissidents.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Mnangagwa was the head of state security and the Central Intelligence Organization during the wave of terror.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The cabinet appointments take immediate effect, said Regis Chikowore of Zimbabwe&#8217;s Information Ministry. We did so in the genuine, perhaps naive, view that the country could actually move forward. We craved for change, peace and stability in our country. How wrong we were,&#8221; wrote Tendai Biti, Zimbabwe&#8217;s former finance minister and a prominent government critic.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Zimbabwean media mogul Trevor Ncube tweeted: &#8220;President Mnangagwa&#8217;s cabinet is very disappointing. Largely the same people that caused this crisis have been recycled. The honeymoon comes to an end and reality dawns. At his inauguration, Mnangagwa promised reforms to lift Zimbabwe out of poverty by jump-starting the country&#8217;s stagnant economy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Chris Mutsvangwa, head of the influential Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, which threw its support behind Mnangagwa, is the country&#8217;s new information minister.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Mnangagwa also appointed six new deputy ministers and 10 ministers of state for provincial affairs.
