FORMER South African President and broker of Zimbabwe\u2019s 2009-13 unity government, Thabo Mbeki is set to meet MDC leader Nelson Chamisa amid clear signs of his renewed interest to find a lasting solution to the troubled country\u2019s mounting problems.<\/p>\n
Mbeki met President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday for a closed door meeting at State House.<\/p>\n
He hinted on his bid to see Zimbabwe restored to order.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe all have a responsibility to help one another to the extent that we can do anything we can do to assist brethren, the Government and the country,\u201d he told the media Monday soon after meeting Mnangagwa.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, the reason we spent this amount of time (in the meeting) as I have said, is because I haven\u2019t seen the President in Harare as President of the Republic, so there was a lot of ground to cover.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I am very glad indeed with what the President and the country are doing to respond to the challenges, and I think it\u2019s very important that the region comes behind the President and the country because the challenges of Zimbabwe are our challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mbeki, during his time as South African leader, was tasked by SADC together with his country to resolve fierce differences that existed between then President Robert Mugabe and the latter\u2019s MDC rival Morgan Tsvangirai, also late.<\/p>\n
This followed heavily disputed Zimbabwean elections of 2008 in which Mugabe lost to Tsvangirai in the first round of the poll but muscled his way back through a controversial run-off from which his rival pulled out citing state sponsored violence targeted at his structures.<\/p>\n
This saw back and forth movements by Zanu PF and MDC negotiators to South Africa.<\/p>\n
The talks resulted in Mugabe remaining leader of the hybrid administration while Tsvangirai became Prime Minister.<\/p>\n
However, the former leaders\u2019 successors have reignited the fight, again after another disputed election.<\/p>\n
A thaw in bitter relations between Mnangagwa and Chamisa, who lead the country\u2019s two most dominant political parties, is seen as the first step towards the restoration of economic prosperity for the troubled Southern African country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
