Justifying the exorbitant prices, Mnangagwa said this would help stimulate Zimbabwe&#8217;s economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"c0dcdb87-7262-eb23-4856-5d2f31c0ade0\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-text\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p>After the announcement was made, a three-day protest was called by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 14: Zimbabwe shuts down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On day one of the stay-away, the streets of Bulawayo and Harare were bloody. Scores of people were injured, sprayed with teargas, assaulted and shot.<\/p>\n<p>More than five people, including a police officer, have been killed, while 26 were wounded by Zimbabwean security services.\u00a0Streets were blocked and many commuters were left stranded as a result of a public transport strike.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"02b7f391-e8ab-ab83-c775-bdf0cc7fce1e\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-related_articles\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"related-container\" data-ids=\"[5915016129675264]\" data-style=\"image\">\n<div class=\"media clearfix\">\n<div class=\"media-left\">\n<div class=\"article-image\">\n<div id=\"7375e0c5-0a16-1786-3963-b77f33fc44be\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-text\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p>Well-known activist Evan Mawarire said that his Twitter account had been blocked and the only way he could access it was through a VPN,\u00a0or Virtual Private Network, which allows you to create a secure connection to another network over the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, Zimbabweans accused the government of disrupting internet supply. Government officials denied this.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the limited connectivity, news still filtered through that schools, banks and businesses remained shut.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"72baca88-93e0-c8aa-4e67-a7ec9c653a94\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-text\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p><strong>January 16: Calls for calm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Mnangagwa was in Russia while his country was burning. Eventually he released a statement to call for calm. He said the protests were &#8220;not the Zimbabwean way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"6b1f0cb5-407f-b5d0-fd42-1f80775d298a\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-text\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p><strong>What next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reports from ordinary Zimbabweans on the ground continue to paint a devastating picture.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/news\/africa\/2019-01-17-scores-arrested-beaten-as-zimbabwe-police-crack-down-on-protests\/\">Reuters<\/a>\u00a0reported that opposition lawmaker and activist Joanna Mamombe was in hiding as she &#8220;feared for her life.&#8221; It&#8217;s been alleged that her father was assaulted by soldiers and he has since been admitted to hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Although the stay-away has officially ended, many businesses, schools and government buildings remain closed.
