THE City of Bulawayo has, with immediate effect, banned the sell of second hand clothes in the city as part of a raft of measures put by the local authority to curb the spread of coronavirus.<\/p>\n
The city has also limited the number of mourners to gather at a cemetery to a maximum to 30 per funeral while the back-filling of graves will now only be done by municipal grave diggers.<\/p>\n
Addressing journalists in Bulawayo Thursday, Bulawayo mayor Solomon Mguni said following the World Health Organisation (WHO)\u2019s declaration of the coronavirus as a pandemic and that of President Emmerson Mnangagwa as a national disaster, city councillors met this week and came up with a cocktail of preventive measures that have to be implemented with immediate effect.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Bulawayo City Council has come up with the following preventive measures with immediate effect: Suspension of weekend flea markets (Khothama) with immediate effect,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe city recognises that while the weekend flea markets provide a source of revenue for the city\u2019s informal traders, they also congregate in large numbers increasing the vulnerability of residents in spreading coronavirus to Bulawayo.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bulawayo has not recorded a single case of the deadly coronavirus infection.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe city has made a decision to limit the number of mourners at a cemetery to a maximum of 30 per family. The backfilling of graves will now be done by municipal staff and not members of the public,\u201d announced Mguni.<\/p>\n
The mayor also said his council was working with informal traders for a reduction of vending stalls at the markets such as 5th Avenue in line with the social distancing recommendations of at least one metre apart.<\/p>\n
Mguni said the city would engage the transport sector to reduce its fleet of public vehicles, the number of passengers a vehicle carries and also provide sanitation needs in all vehicles.<\/p>\n
