{"id":23308,"date":"2020-05-19T18:41:48","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T16:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=23308"},"modified":"2020-05-19T18:41:48","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T16:41:48","slug":"zimbabweans-in-s-a-use-app-to-send-food-home-after-border-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/zimbabweans-in-s-a-use-app-to-send-food-home-after-border-restrictions","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabweans In S.A Use App To Send Food Home After Border Restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Petronella Mabhena, a domestic worker in South Africa, has been paying bus drivers to ferry food to her relatives in Zimbabwe for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p>As with many other families from Zimbabwe whose members depend on food from South Africa, the supplies were abruptly halted when the two countries restricted movement across their border in March to prevent the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was confused and did not know what to do,\u201d said Mabhena, 53, who sends food to her mother and daughter.<\/p>\n<p>A friend told her about an app that lets people in South Africa order groceries for delivery in Zimbabwe, where prices for food and other essentials have soared amid a severe economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Use of the app called Malaicha \u2013 Ndebele slang for the traditional way of sending goods over the border with bus and taxi drivers \u2013 surged in April, said its managing director, Sayjil Magan.<\/p>\n<p>While the border has been closed to people and the taxis and buses that would normally ferry food informally, Malaicha is permitted to import goods into Zimbabwe, offering an alternative.<\/p>\n<p>About a year old, the app has yet to break even, in part because its costs, including trucks and warehousing, are higher than the typical digital startup.<\/p>\n<p>But if its user base continues to grow, it could emerge as a rare winner from South Africa\u2019s lockdown, one of the world\u2019s most restrictive.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Malaicha handled an average of 20,000 to 30,000 orders a month, Magan said, but that number increased by around 200% month-on-month in April, while user numbers grew by around 100% to 75,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something they are going to carry on using; that\u2019s the feedback that we are getting from our customers,\u201d Magan said.<\/p>\n<p>In Zimbabwe\u2019s capital Harare, one of five major cities where Malaicha operates, deliveries reached 200 a day in April, from an average of 20 before the lockdown, said warehouse manager Mario Ventouris.<\/p>\n<p>Workers were putting in extra hours to clear long lines of people who had come to collect orders, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Delivery driver Decide Sabamba said his job was tougher than before: \u201cIt\u2019s busy, it\u2019s busy every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He brought cooking oil and diapers to Mabhena\u2019s daughter, Epiphania Moyo, and her baby \u2013 their first delivery via the app.<\/p>\n<p>The family is all too familiar with the frustration of traditional malaicha deliveries, which they said cost more and don\u2019t always arrive on time or in full. Their experience with the app was different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are very fast; they delivered everything. I will use it again,\u201d Moyo added.
