The Chinese Parliament has supported the new security law which takes away Hong Kong\u2019s semi-autonomous status. The law which is expected to ban treason, subversion and sedition, has already triggered pro-democracy protests resulting in the arrest of hundreds of people.<\/p>\n

Although the full details of the bill are not yet known, it is premised at criminalising:
\n\u2022 secession \u2013 breaking away from the country
\n\u2022 subversion \u2013 undermining the power or authority of the central government
\n\u2022 terrorism \u2013 using violence or intimidation against people
\n\u2022 activities by foreign forces that interfere in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

\u2026when needed, relevant national security organs of the Central People\u2019s Government will set up agencies in Hong Kong to fulfil relevant duties to safeguard national security in accordance with the law.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That means China could potentially have its own law enforcement agencies in Hong Kong, alongside the city\u2019s own.
\nThe authorities in Hong Kong insist the law is essential to tackle growing violence and \u201cterrorism\u201d, and that the territory\u2019s residents have nothing to fear from it.<\/p>\n
