GENEVA: South\u00a0African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that lifting sanctions against Zimbabwe was the best way for the world to ease\u00a0the crisis gripping the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is no longer necessary to have sanctions against Zimbabwe right now, because they have embarked on democracy and a path of real recovery and we will help them best by lifting those sanctions,\u201d Ramaphosa said during an appearance at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva.<\/p>\n

Ramaphosa made the suggestion despite\u00a0protests in Zimbabwe\u00a0last week, sparked by the government\u2019s\u00a0more than doubling of fuel prices, that the army and police ruthlessly suppressed.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the government-appointed Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission said\u00a0at least eight people had been killed<\/a>\u00a0and the security forces had used \u201csystematic torture\u201d.<\/p>\n

President Emmerson Mnangagwa<\/a>\u00a0has vowed to turn the page on the repressive era of Robert Mugabe, who was ousted from power by the military 14 months ago.<\/p>\n

Ramaphosa told reporters that lifting sanctions against Zimbabwe \u201cin many ways would relieve the tension that is currently in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe could thus \u201cbegin to operate in an economic manner with the capabilities that it has,\u201d he suggested.<\/p>\n

Ramaphosa said\u00a0South\u00a0Africa\u00a0was talking with Zimbabwe<\/a>\u00a0about how to help it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are involved in serious discussions to see how best any form of assistance can be made available to Zimbabwe. We have not yet reached a conclusion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

South\u00a0Africa\u00a0has had several discussions with Zimbabwe about\u00a0how it can help alleviate the crisis<\/a>\u00a0but an agreement between the neighbouring states had not yet been reached, the president said.<\/p>\n

Ramaphosa added that he and Mnangagwa \u201cwill meet at a later stage to see what is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The United States, the European Union and other states imposed sanctions against Zimbabwe in response to Mugabe\u2019s various crackdowns during his tenure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
