{"id":24369,"date":"2020-06-17T21:16:12","date_gmt":"2020-06-17T19:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=24369"},"modified":"2020-06-17T21:16:12","modified_gmt":"2020-06-17T19:16:12","slug":"zim-security-forces-shut-down-cities-over-insurgency-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/zim-security-forces-shut-down-cities-over-insurgency-threat","title":{"rendered":"Zim security forces shut down cities over &#8216;insurgency threat&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Africa Press-Nigeria:<\/p>\n<p>The military and police in Zimbabwe this week launched a blitz operation to curb potential civil unrest.<\/p>\n<p>Between Monday and Wednesday, Harare, Bulawayo and Kwekwe have been shut down without notice following intelligence that civil society and the opposition were plotting insurgency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state decided on an enhanced lockdown last week, acting on the basis of information and threats which civilians never know beforehand,\u201d said presidential spokesperson George Charamba.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, home affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe issued a statement dispelling rumours of a coup by the army.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to questions in parliament on Wednesday, Kazembe said it was classified intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are issues of a sensitive nature. What I gave to the public was enough,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing before the parliamentary portfolio committee on health and child care, police commissioner Gen Godwin Matanga said their enhanced operation was because \u201cthere are elements within the country who want to do certain things also riding on the same [Covid-19 lockdown] operation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday, government workers received reduced salaries &#8211; at a time when inflation has shot up, resulting in an average civil servant earning an equivalent of R500.<\/p>\n<p>Nurses at the country\u2019s biggest referral hospital, Harare\u2019s Parirenyatwa, staged a demonstration on Wednesday. A nationwide strike would have been catastrophic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got paid yesterday. The bread price increased today, and so did sugar. In a few days, other basics will follow. In other words, my pay won\u2019t take me beyond Friday,\u201d said one nurse.<\/p>\n<p>Legislator Temba Mliswa in parliament on Wednesday said the government should address the economy and everything else would fall into place because people are angry because of hunger.<\/p>\n<p>The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) said it will increase pressure on the government. \u201cThe bottom line is that we are prepared to liberate ourselves from a parasitic and exploitative system,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa Press-Nigeria: The military and police in Zimbabwe this week launched a blitz operation to curb potential civil unrest.
