The government has revealed it has failed again to pay social grants to vulnerable families whose welfare were deeply affected by the COVID-19, the Daily News reports.<\/p>\n

The government accepted that the grant has been increased from $180 to $300 but it was yet to be paid as treasury was delaying in releasing the funds to the social welfare ministry.<\/p>\n

In a post-cabinet briefing this week, Social Welfare Minister Paul Mavima said:<\/p>\n

The grant started off at $180, but it\u2019s now at $300. Repeatedly, we have said that we continue to engage the Treasury to increase and release more funding.<\/div>\n

However, all these are functions of the budget and available resources. As such, we will continue to engage Treasury on issues of the money and whether we can up it a little bit, taking into account the issue of inflation.<\/div>\n

We have now paid about 202 077 beneficiaries and we continue registering others and we will be paying them $300 this month.<\/div>\n

Initially, we experienced delays in registering people because we wanted to make sure that those who are registered are really bonafide vulnerable people and we had to go over the database many times over,<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The government promised to pay\u00a01 million vulnerable families $200 for 3 months<\/a>\u00a0when the lockdown started and said they were setting aside $600 million for the social grants to the vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/div>\n
