HARARE: Despite being a renowned tobacco producer globally, Zimbabwe is inserted in the global value chain mainly as a grower and exporter of the golden-leaf.<\/p>\n
The southern African country is the largest producer of tobacco in Africa, and the sixth producer in the world.<\/p>\n
Capitalizing on the country\u2019s outstanding position in the tobacco industry, Zimbabwe\u2019s first hand-rolled cigar firm, Mosi-Oa-Tunya, is determined to plug the country\u2019s value addition gap.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are answering the call for Africa to industrialize, and we are also answering the call for Africa to work on value addition of our products instead of just sending our products in raw form,\u201d Mosi-Oa-Tunya, founder and CEO Shep Mafundikwa, told Xinhua in an interview at his manufacturing plant in Harare.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are determined to play our part, to put Zimbabwe on the map, and we feel that with this project we are going to do just that,\u201d said Mafundikwa.<\/p>\n
Following his early retirement after living and working in the United States for 15 years, last year Mafundikwa returned to Zimbabwe to set up the cigar company.<\/p>\n
Before he started production, Mafundikwa travelled to Cuba and the Dominican Republic to learn the craft of making cigars.<\/p>\n
Mosi-Oa-Tunya, which means \u201cthe smoke that thunders\u201d in the local Lozi language, uses locally grown tobacco and wrappers imported from the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n
Mafundikwa said he is determined to take on established players in the cigar industry, especially in the lucrative Asian market.<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously the U.S. is the biggest market but China is also a huge market, and the fact that we are already sending our tobacco to China in its raw form, there was an opportunity here to do value addition to our tobacco, and getting into the Asian market is one of our goals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The reception of the brand \u201chas been phenomenal, not only at home but abroad as well,\u201d said Mafundikwa.<\/p>\n
Apart from adding value to Zimbabwe\u2019s tobacco, creating employment in the process, Mosi-Oa-Tunya also aims to empower women.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we are also creating employment. Our company is focusing more on women empowerment, as you can see all our rollers here are women, so in our small way we are playing our part in creating employment and also empowering women,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Since March, Mosi-Oa-Tunya\u2019s all-female group of cigar rollers has been undergoing on-the-job training at the factory.<\/p>\n
Despite a depressed economic environment, Mafundikwa is confident that Mosi-Oa-Tunya has what it takes to compete with other established cigar makers.<\/p>\n
However, the lockdown imposed to stem the spread of COVID-19 has disrupted the company\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut the biggest challenge that I could say we are facing at the moment is the global pandemic that\u2019s currently ravaging the world, and this is not only something that is affecting Zimbabwe, but it\u2019s affecting the whole world. So to try and start up something in this environment is not easy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Despite two decades of economic downturn, Zimbabwe continues to punch above its weight when it comes to tobacco production.<\/p>\n
Favorable geographic position and climatic conditions earn Zimbabwe\u2019s tobacco a high reputation in the global markets.<\/p>\n
Tobacco is the country\u2019s second-biggest foreign currency earner after gold.<\/p>\n
China, which is the largest tobacco market in the world, has been the biggest buyer of Zimbabwe\u2019s tobacco for several years, and has also been a major funder of the production of the crop through contract farming.<\/p>\n
The Chinese funding in tobacco production has largely helped to lift the country\u2019s production, from a record low of 48 million kg in 2008, to 259 million kg in 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
