{"id":26063,"date":"2020-08-04T20:55:49","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T18:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=26063"},"modified":"2020-08-04T20:55:49","modified_gmt":"2020-08-04T18:55:49","slug":"security-sector-hijacks-zim-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/security-sector-hijacks-zim-economy","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Security sector hijacks Zim economy\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ZIMBABWE\u2019S security sector has taken over control of all levers of the national economy, making it difficult to eliminate corruption as the \u201claw does not apply to them\u201d, the Public Policy Research Institute of Zimbabwe (PRIZ) has claimed, but government yesterday dismissed the assertion as \u201cnonsense\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a virtual meeting organised by the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development, PRIZ executive director Gorden Moyo last week said the military was running Zimbabwe\u2019s economy.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen these people (the army) are involved in corruption, the Executive is tongue-tied; is hamstrung to deal with them and that is why we have a number of people who are arrested and released \u2014 catch and release. It\u2019s because the members of the military are in charge of the economy,\u201d Moyo, who served as State Enterprises and Parastatals minister in the government of national unity, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd because they are in charge of the economy, particularly the mining sector and fuel business which are big businesses in the country and when these guys are involved in illicit deals \u2014 externalisation of funds, money-laundering and other financial crimes, they are not called to order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaw does not apply to them. They operate above the law simply because they installed a government in November 2017. We have a huge problem folks on our hands as a country because we have a highly securitised economy, a highly militarised State,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But Media, Information and Broadcasting Services minister Monica Mutsvangwa yesterday rubbished Moyo\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n<p>She said empirical evidence had shown that it was the abuse of the mobile money platforms by the dominant mobile networks that had choked the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry this is a lot of nonsense. Empirical evidence have shown that it is abuse of mobile money platforms by dominant mobile networks and money-laundering through the stock exchange,\u201d Mutsvangwa charged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatutory instruments against these two institutions have had a dramatic impact on the economy. Neither the stock exchange nor the mobile money platforms are owned by a politburo member.
