{"id":2668,"date":"2019-01-28T13:17:18","date_gmt":"2019-01-28T13:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=2668"},"modified":"2019-01-28T13:17:18","modified_gmt":"2019-01-28T13:17:18","slug":"south-africa-must-remain-diplomatic-but-tough-on-zim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/south-africa-must-remain-diplomatic-but-tough-on-zim","title":{"rendered":"South Africa must remain diplomatic, but tough on Zim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CRIES of moral outrage have greeted the brutal crackdown by the Zimbabwean security forces on nationwide protests sparked by a sudden, massive, government-ordained hike in the price of fuel.<span id=\"more-3096224744012002\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Naturally enough, the demand is that \u201csomething must be done\u201d to stop the brutality.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve people have already died, hundreds have been injured and there have been mass round-ups.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsd-1205699381\" class=\"newsd-2nd-advert-incontent\">\n<p>In South Africa, demands that President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s government should take firm action are fuelled by two factors.<\/p>\n<p>The presence of a large Zimbabwean migrant community within the country is one.<\/p>\n<p>The second is a widespread sense that Pretoria\u2019s policy towards its errant neighbour has always been one of light wrist-tapping rather than a vigorous twisting of arms.<\/p>\n<p>Inter-liberation movement solidarity is widely said to have strangled serious South African criticisms of Zimbabwean governments.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cquiet diplomacy\u201d has been regularly dismissed as a strategy of doing nothing.<\/p>\n<p>If South Africa got serious, say the critics, President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s regime would have to comply with its demands.
