MDC Alliance deputy national chairperson, Job \u201cWiwa\u201d Sikhala, has said popularity alone will not guarantee power for the opposition party.<\/p>\n

He made the remarks recently while addressing mourners\u00a0at the funeral of MDC Alliance MP Anna Muyamb<\/a>o in Chitungwiza.<\/p>\n

The Zengeza West legislator speaks when the popular MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa is being accused of lacking a strategy to dislodge the ruling ZANU PF from power. He told mourners:<\/p>\n

We have lost several party stalwarts since we began this journey. We cannot all perish before we reach our destination \u2026 What I have noticed is that popularity alone is not the way to get State power.<\/p>\n

I remember Daniel arap Moi in Kenya when he grabbed power from Jomo Kenyatta and was supposed to be a transitional leader for just six months, but clung to power for 24 years,\u201d Sikhala said amid clapping and ululation from the gathered crowd.<\/p>\n

I also remembered that Patrice Lumumba was the most popular leader of the liberation struggle in Africa, but an unpopular Mobutu Sese Seko took charge of Zaire (now DRC) for over 30 years.<\/p>\n

The late (former president) Robert Mugabe was probably the most unpopular leader since the history of mankind and Morgan Tsvangirai was the most popular leader since the advent of politics, yet he died before he took State power.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sikhala added that Chamisa and the party are the most popular brands in the politics of this country, yet they were not in power while Mnangagwa who \u201ccannot be voted for by a donkey\u201d and Khupe who \u201cis hated by dogs and reptiles,\u201d were in power.<\/p>\n

He suggested that they needed to devise a strategy to avoid a situation whereby popular leaders, including Chamisa and himself, die popular but without taking over power.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
