GOVERNMENT is confident that 200 kilometers of the Harare \u2013 Beitbridge highway will have been completed by the end of the year.
\nSpeaking on the sidelines of a strategic planning workshop held in Bulawayo, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Honourable, Joel Biggie Matiza said he is pleased with the way the rehabilitation of the Harare-Beitbridge highway is equipping locals with technical skills which will benefit the nation in the long term.<\/p>\n
Minister Matiza also revealed that a stretch of 200 km is expected to be complete by year end.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat comes out of it is very important, the employment of our locals and saving foreign currency and also the development of technical skills. Now the guys who are there can have experience. In the beginning the progress was slow but now they have been attuned to the programme,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He also revealed that treasury has disbursed funds for the rehabilitation of major roads across the country to continue.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have roads that were on a certain level, prime level, we have received funding which will cascade to other areas to continue the work. All we do not want is getting those roads that were at advanced level being destroyed by the rains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The ministry has resolved to employ a new model to speed up road works through capacitating CMED as the required equipment is more expensive to lease or hire from contractors.<\/p>\n
