The interim leadership of the opposition MDC-T has said a Government of National Unity (GNU) was now necessary as a strategy to address the country\u2019s deepening socio-economic and political crises.<\/p>\n
MDC-T\u2019S Secretary-General, Douglas Mwonzora and the chairperson Morgen Komichi told the Daily News on Tuesday that they were keen to engage the ruling ZANU PF for the suffering masses. Komichi said:<\/p>\n
We want talks that will culminate in a mechanism that will alleviate the people\u2019s suffering like we did in 2008 when the level of suffering had become unbearable.<\/p>\n
We negotiated and came up with a GNU. So, the same is necessary now. Whatever name you give to the platform \u2014 GNU, National Transitional Authority or anything else \u2014 must be an outcome of a negotiation.<\/p>\n
What is key is that, as a party our ambition is not to take over the State presidency, but to make sure that we work towards the improvement of our people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n
There are no jobs, incomes are very low and we cannot continue like this.<\/p>\n
Mwonzora reiterated Komichi\u2019s remarks adding that MDC believed that Zimbabwe\u2019s problems can be resolved through dialogue opposed to \u201cconfrontation, acrimony, rancour and violence.\u201d He hinted that the process to engage ZANU PF was already underway. Mwonzora said:
\nSo, yes, when the time comes, when the internal process is done and when our consultations are completed, you will see us calling for dialogue.<\/p>\n
There is enough historical evidence in this country to show that most of the problems and big issues are resolved through dialogue.<\/p>\n
MDC insiders, however, claimed that informal talks between Zanu PF and their party had already begun with Mwonzora always in constant touch with a senior Zanu PF official over the GNU issue.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, ZANU PF acting Secretary for Information, Patrick Chinamasa has said the push for a transitional authority was an undemocratic and overzealous endeavour aimed at smuggling into office politicians who lost elections.<\/p>\n
This comes as the prolonged impasse between ZANU PF and the opposition in the country is said to be worsening an already collapsed economy.<\/p>\n
