B2Gold Chief Executive Officer Clive Johnson said the Canadian company has held talks with the government about changing the rules to unlock investment.<\/p>\n<p>While mining investment is key to rebooting Zimbabwe\u2019s collapsing economy, the nation suffers from an acute shortage of dollars. As the rally in bullion generates more interest in the industry, the government is \u201cweighing its options\u201d on whether to grant investors gold-trading licenses, said Deputy Mines Minister Polite Kambamura.<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-lg-8 order-0\">\n<p>\u201cThe ability to handle gold sales is critical to a company like ours,\u201d said B2Gold\u2019s Johnson. \u201cIt\u2019s an issue that would have to be clarified first for one to buy some assets and build some gold mines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe currently forces gold miners to sell their bullion to Fidelity Printers and Refiners Ltd. It pays them 70% in dollars and the remainder in local currency.<\/p>\n<p>Payment delays of\u00a0up to\u00a0two weeks by Fidelity Printers and Refiners have impacted on producers, according to Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe CEO Isaac Kwesu. Existing mines require almost $400 million in fresh capital, the industry lobby group said.<\/p>\n<p>Gold output in the southern African nation plunged 30% in the first 10 months of 2020 from a year earlier. Exports of the precious metal, which the nation relies on for most of its foreign-exchange earnings, slumped 23% to $697.7 million during that period, according to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>To justify building new mines, Jersey-based\u00a0Caledonia\u00a0would need to take charge of its gold sales, said CEO Steve Curtis, whose company is interested in buying one of Zimbabwe\u2019s largest gold operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are the conversations the authorities have to get their heads around if you want an industry to be invested in,\u201c Curtis said in an interview. \u201cThat legislation, if they get rid of it, the level of investment would no question be up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-4 order-2 order-lg-1 order-xl-1\">\n<div class=\"ad-block-side my-3 d-flex justify-content-center col-lg-12 ad-slot\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1557778459048-0\" class=\"ad-slot d-flex justify-content-center\" data-google-query-id=\"CK-NjKLe_ewCFZHwhwodP28IOg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gold mining investors are pressuring Zimbabwe to change a law forcing producers to sell their output to the central bank, which part pays them in local currency that\u2019s worthless outside the country.
