The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) on Tuesday suspended the setting of examination papers after examiners downed tools over a payment dispute.<\/p>\n
Over 100 examiners, mostly teachers, who were camped at the Chinhoyi University of Technology, rejected the $4 000 payment offer which they deemed too little for the 12 days they were supposed to work.<\/p>\n
The teachers were set to prepare questions for compilation into examination papers for future use by ZIMSEC.<\/p>\n
They reportedly demanded to be paid the equivalent of US$300 that they had been receiving in previous years.<\/p>\n
ZIMSEC communications director Nicollet Dhlamini confirmed the suspension of the exercise, saying this, however, will not affect this year\u2019s examinations as they had already been set. Said Dhlamini:<\/p>\n
The issue of money was raised, but it could not be resolved immediately as it meant that there was a need to renegotiate their contracts.<\/p>\n
All the teachers who were doing item writing had contracts, but they demanded more and we had no option, but to stop the exercise.<\/p>\n
\u2026 This year\u2019s examinations were set already and this development will not have any effect on them. The items were for future examinations.<\/p>\n
The 2020 public examinations commence on 1 December after exam classes resumed lessons on 28 September.<\/p>\n
Grade 7 and Advanced Level examinations will be completed this year while Ordinary Level exams will spill over into January 2021.<\/p>\n
