{"id":30324,"date":"2020-11-20T18:17:57","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T16:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/just-in-hopewell-chinono-freed-on-bail"},"modified":"2020-11-20T18:17:57","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T16:17:57","slug":"just-in-hopewell-chinono-freed-on-bail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/just-in-hopewell-chinono-freed-on-bail","title":{"rendered":"JUST IN: Hopewell Chin\u2019ono Freed On Bail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Zimbabwean prominent freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker, Hopewell Chin\u2019ono has been freed on bail is expected to be released later this evening.<\/p>\n<p>Granting bail, High Court judge Justice Chitapi found that Magistrate Gofa grossly misdirected herself in denying the journalist bail.<\/p>\n<p>The CNN Africa Journalist of the year award winner was arrested over two weeks ago over a tweet in which he suggested that Zimbabwe Mining Federation president, Ms Henrietta Rushwaya, charged with gold smuggling would be released on bail.<\/p>\n<p>The state argued that the tweet was an obstruction of justice and was in violation of the journalist\u2019s bail conditions for his incitement of violence case.<\/p>\n<p>His arrest over 2 weeks ago was the 2nd time he\u2019d been arrested this year after he was arrested on 20 July for rallying the citizenry to participate in the foiled 31 July anti-corruption protests which had been convened by Jacob Ngarivhume of opposition Transform Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>The bail granted by Justice Chitapi has the same conditions as his previous case of incitement of violence which the journalist allegedly violated. Read more about the conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, scores of people and organisations have welcomed the release of the journalist with some urging authorities to \u201cdo the right thing and stop any further persecution and victimization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some implored the state to completely drop all charges against Chin\u2019ono and allow him to work freely adding that journalism was not a crime.<\/p>\n<p>MDC Alliance Treasurer-General, David Coltart, said Chin\u2019ono\u2019s release was a relief. The former minister of Primary and Secondary Education during the Government of National Unity era tweeted:<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m relieved that Hopewell Chin\u2019ono @daddyhope has been released on bail. He should never have been charged in the 1st place &amp; the Magistrate\u2019s denial of bail is a serious misdirection &amp; should be investigated.
