{"id":31749,"date":"2020-12-27T21:44:03","date_gmt":"2020-12-27T19:44:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=31749"},"modified":"2020-12-27T18:53:17","modified_gmt":"2020-12-27T16:53:17","slug":"biti-mafume-arrested-for-exposing-capture-of-councils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/biti-mafume-arrested-for-exposing-capture-of-councils","title":{"rendered":"BITI: Mafume Arrested For Exposing Capture Of Councils"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>MDC Alliance vice president, Tendai Biti, claims Harare Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, was arrested for exposing the capture of local authorities by the central government.<\/p>\n<p>His remarks come as Mafume is in prison after he was arrested for criminal abuse of office after he allegedly parcelled out council stands to his relatives earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Posting on Twitter on Saturday, the former Minister of Finance during the Government of National Unity (GNU) era, called for the immediate release of Mafume. He said:<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Harare Jacob Mafume is a humble intelligent, jovial, decent comrade.<\/p>\n<p>Zanu PF has targeted him for exposing its capture of local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The Mwonzora and Khupe cabal has been complicit in this agenda. For Christ\u2019s sake, release him now.<\/p>\n<p>His remarks are consistent with those of other MDC Alliance members who argued that he was arrested for opposing the demolition of \u201cillegal\u201d structures across the city.<\/p>\n<p>The demolitions caused a lot of pandemonium with the ruling party accusing the MDC Alliance-dominated council of destroying people\u2019s homes while the opposition party claimed the city officials responsible for the demolitions were central government appointees not control by MDC.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mafume\u2019s bail hearing has been set for this Monday at the High Court.
