\u00a0Nelson Chamisa, the president of Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has rejected the invitation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa to participate in a national dialogue, Dr. Nkululeko Sibanda, the presidential spokesman for the party’s president, told Sputnik on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“No, because it will be a sham. There can be no talks,” Sibanda said, asked if the MDC would participate in\u00a0the national dialogue talks.<\/p>\n

Sibanda also argued that the agenda of\u00a0the Mnangagwa-proposed talks skipped over\u00a0vital issues relating to\u00a0the country’s legal and economic environment.<\/p>\n

“We have been told that it is a post-election dialogue and the agenda does not include some of\u00a0the important questions around\u00a0the application of\u00a0the constitution, the legitimacy of\u00a0the government, and also how to\u00a0turn around\u00a0the economy,” Sibanda stated.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Sibanda,\u00a0Mnangagwa ignored security problems in\u00a0the country when he called a national dialogue congress.<\/p>\n

“We have a terrible security situation in\u00a0the country and we are being provided with\u00a0a venue. We certainly don’t think that the venue is safe. Therefore we don’t think that President Mnangagwa is being genuine,” Sibanda said.<\/p>\n

Earlier on\u00a0Wednesday, Mnangagwa said he had called a meeting of\u00a0all political parties, in\u00a0a bid to\u00a0kick-start the national dialogue.<\/p>\n

“I have invited the leaders of\u00a0all political parties to\u00a0come together, without\u00a0preconditions, to\u00a0begin a process of\u00a0national dialogue. Let us all put the people first and politics second,” he tweeted.<\/p>\n

Calls for\u00a0a national dialogue have been getting louder in\u00a0Zimbabwe in\u00a0light of\u00a0the country’s violent suppression of\u00a0nationwide protests against\u00a0increased fuel prices, which came into\u00a0effect in\u00a0mid-January. According to\u00a0media reports, over\u00a010 people have been killed in\u00a0protests, while dozens of\u00a0others have received gunshot wounds.
