{"id":3297,"date":"2019-02-07T14:38:33","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T14:38:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=3297"},"modified":"2019-02-07T14:38:33","modified_gmt":"2019-02-07T14:38:33","slug":"teachers-warm-up-to-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/teachers-warm-up-to-government","title":{"rendered":"Teachers Warm Up to Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"25\">Teachers countrywide yesterday ignored a call to down tools, indicating they were warming up to dialogue and Government&#8217;s interventions to cushion them from economic challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"32\">The failure of the billed strike action was a major setback for the Zimbabwe Teachers&#8217; Association (Zimta) and the Progressive Teachers&#8217; Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) that had insisted on the job action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"22\">By Monday, though, most teachers&#8217; unions had called off the strike after they met Primary and Secondary Education Minister Professor Paul Mavima.<\/p>\n<p data-para-word-count=\"22\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1119\" src=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/01\/teachers-march61-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/upload\/sites\/14\/2019\/01\/teachers-march61-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/upload\/sites\/14\/2019\/01\/teachers-march61-768x528.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/upload\/sites\/14\/2019\/01\/teachers-march61-100x70.jpg 100w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/upload\/sites\/14\/2019\/01\/teachers-march61-218x150.jpg 218w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/upload\/sites\/14\/2019\/01\/teachers-march61.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"39\">Prof Mavima outlined to them a battery of interventions, including non-monetary incentives, that President Mnangagwa has rolled out to lessen the burden on the worker in the face of painful austerity measures being administered to ensure long-term economic recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"17\">Apex Council organising secretary Mr Charles Chinosengwa yesterday said most schools recorded a 100 percent teacher turnout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"36\">&#8220;We have been going around the schools to see if our members have heeded our call to give dialogue a chance and I can report that it was business as usual in our schools,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"22\">&#8220;We have visited high-density areas in Harare like Glen Norah, Mufakose, Highfield and Glen View and teachers and children are in class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"51\">&#8220;If there were disturbances, it would be because of the heavy rains witnessed in the morning. We are encouraging our members to continue with their duties until we exhaust all the negotiating channels with Government. We will only declare a strike if Government fails to implement what we agreed on Monday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"responsive-aans-view-a-container\" class=\"outer-ad-container responsive-aans-view-a-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-container google-ad google-responsive-ad responsive-ad responsive-aans-view-ad responsive-aans-view-a\">\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"27\">Mr Chinosengwa added: &#8220;We have seen the non-monetary incentives and initiatives that Government wants to give teachers and we are saying let us give this a chance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"15\">Government committed itself to operationalising a raft of non-monetary incentives and empowerment initiatives for teachers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"36\">Sector-specific issues which the teachers want addressed include acting, head of department and examination allowances; accommodation challenges; corruption within Government when members want to transfer; permission to go on annual leave and annual leave on transfer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">The educators also want their children, at least three per individual, to be exempted from paying school fees at Government institutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"26\">Task teams, constituted by teachers unions&#8217; representatives and officials from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, were set up to ensure implementation of the agreements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"30\">The Herald yesterday visited schools such as David Livingstone Primary School, Girls High, Allan Wilson High School, Blakiston Primary School and Harare High School and found teachers busy with classes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"20\">Lessons also went on smoothly at schools such as Mhuriimwe Secondary School in Highfield, Mukai and Highfield One High Schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">&#8220;We are conducting classes as usual and there no threats from any quarter,&#8221; said one teacher at Highfield One High School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">In Masvingo, it was business as usual at both urban and rural as teachers ignored calls to stay away from work.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"center-b-container\" class=\"outer-ad-container center-b-container\">\n<div id=\"adclickafrica-in-view-marker\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"teads-in-view-marker\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"sekindo-in-view-marker\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-async-ad-center-b\" class=\"ad-container google-ad center-ad center-b activated fetched\" data-dfp-ad-unit=\"AllAfrica_CenterB\" data-dfp-network=\"1001373\" data-dfp-sizes=\"[[336,280],[300,250]]\" data-adsense-cids=\"4800564425\" data-dfp-dynamic-refresh=\"false\" data-google-query-id=\"CJuyhr3qqeACFRP2dwodU7gNJA\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teachers countrywide yesterday ignored a call to down tools, indicating they were warming up to dialogue and Government&#8217;s interventions to cushion them from economic challenges.
