Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Police in Bulawayo have launched a blitz targeting public transport operators and pirate taxis operating in the city in contravention of national COVID-19 regulations.<\/p>\n

So far police have impounded more than 80 vehicles in Zimbabwe\u2019s second-largest city for illegally transporting people in violation of lockdown regulations with pirate taxis (Mushikashika) topping the list of lockdown violators.<\/p>\n

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the ongoing operation and warned public transporters violating lockdown regulations that they risk being arrested. He said;<\/p>\n

Police in Bulawayo are warning illegal transport operators, be it kombis, trucks or other vehicles ferrying people into town and back that what they are doing is criminal and they risk being arrested.<\/p>\n

Members of the public are urged to comply with the measures put in place by Government to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and this includes motorists and the general public.<\/p>\n

The government announced the level 4 COVID-19 induced 30-day national lockdown on January 5.<\/p>\n

Only buses and commuter omnibuses under the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) franchise are permitted to operate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
