{"id":33611,"date":"2021-01-27T17:19:36","date_gmt":"2021-01-27T15:19:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/?p=33611"},"modified":"2021-01-27T14:37:49","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T12:37:49","slug":"bank-workers-reject-350-wage-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/bank-workers-reject-350-wage-hike","title":{"rendered":"Bank Workers Reject 350% Wage Hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Bank workers have rejected a whooping 350% wage hike offered by employers during ongoing negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>The Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) said it had rejected the offer made by bankers and has warned of a possible strike if their demand for USD salaries is not met.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed increase would result in the least paid worker earning $26 000 from the current $5 800 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a Facebook interview with newZWire, ZIBAWU president Tawanda Mutemi said:<\/p>\n<p>From where we stand, this is clearly an insult to us $26 000 gross is nothing because, if you look at our costs, they are denominated in US dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 Employers want to stick to the inflation clause, the annual inflation clause, which is no longer relevant in this hyperinflationary environment.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not going to be easy, and they (workers) may be required to flex their muscles so that we come up with something better.<\/p>\n<p>The banking sector has not been spared some of the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic though all banks were profitable during the quarter ended September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The banking industry has shed nearly 500 jobs since 2018 and as many as 17% of out of 300 branches have been closed as banks increase their use of digital platforms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Zimbabwe.
