At least three people have been killed as police and soldiers\u00a0in\u00a0Harare<\/a>\u00a0clashed with opposition protesters amid a\u00a0delay in announcing the winner\u00a0of\u00a0Zimbabwe<\/a>\u2019s presidential election. The scene in the capital has deteriorated into serious disorder, according to reports on the ground.<\/p>\n

Gunfire was also heard\u00a0after supporters of Movement for Democratic Change leader\u00a0Nelson Chamisa<\/a>\u00a0took to the streets. Mr Chamisa has\u00a0accused the ruling Zanu-PF\u00a0party of electoral malfeasance and claimed he won the \u201cpopular vote\u201d following Monday\u2019s poll.<\/p>\n

Zanu-PF<\/a>\u00a0won a two-thirds majority in the\u00a0national assembly of parliament\u00a0in the country\u2019s first general election\u00a0since\u00a0Robert Mugabe<\/a>\u00a0was ousted from power in November 2017.\u00a0The result means incumbent president\u00a0Emmerson\u00a0Mnangagwa<\/a>\u2019s party will be empowered to make changes to the constitution at will.<\/p>\n

But the result of the presidential poll has not yet been announced. Zimbabwe\u2019s electoral commission has repeatedly revised its stance on when the presidential winner will be announced, with\u00a0European Union<\/a>\u00a0observers questioning the delay.<\/p>\n

The EU team\u00a0identified a string of problems in Monday\u2019s poll.
