Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to announce new lockdown measures when the current ones imposed on 15 February expire on Monday.<\/p>\n

The nation is expecting relaxed new lockdown measures as coronavirus cases and deaths have been going down of late.<\/p>\n

While some stakeholders including doctors are warning against complacency, businesses have been pushing for the relaxation of the regulations to save the ailing economy and address the ever-growing humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n

Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet Mr. George Charamba yesterday said President Mnangagwa will update the nation before the expiry of the lockdown. He said:<\/p>\n

He is very conscious about that.<\/p>\n

Under the current lockdown measures, only sectors and organisations providing essential services are authorised to operate.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Child Care on Friday unveiled new guidelines authorising ministers and heads of local authorities to give exemptions, where necessary, for the reopening of departments under their purview.<\/p>\n

Speaking ahead of the anticipated State of the Nation Address, Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) president, Mr. Henry Ruzvidzo, said the current lockdown has resulted in market and supply chain disruptions for businesses. He said:<\/p>\n

The rates of infection are indeed down and can be attributed to the swift action taken in January. Our expectation is that we learn from the experience of the past few months on the major sources of risk and take measured responses going forward. It is important to ensure that the economy can rebound recognising the country\u2019s limited capacity to bail out businesses. We expect more businesses to be allowed to resume operations. Zimbabwe experienced a coronavirus resurgence towards the end of 2020\u2019s last quarter prompting the government to impose strict lockdown measures.<\/p>\n
