He said:

At a time when the salaries of MPs and ministers have increased tremendously, (Primary and Secondary Education minister Cain) Mathema does not see the effects of the erosion of teachers’ purchasing power parity.

To assume that teachers earning as little as $13 300, after the latest 25% unilateral government toxic award, can survive, pay fees for their children, and report for work daily, is to ask for too much.

Last month Cabinet approved a 70% pay increment offer for civil servants, which will be paid in a staggered format.

25% is with effect from April, followed by the remainder, 45%, to be paid in June. Speaking on the salary offer early this month, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Paul Mavima said:

In actual fact, the initial offer was 25% then they rejected it and we went back to Treasury, then Treasury said what is available is 70% — not 75% by the way, in between 25% now and 45% in June to make it 70%.

Initially, that communication had not been clear. It was on the basis of the 25% and that is when the initial rejection was made.

The government team went back to NJNC with a clarified offer of 25% and 45% split between April and June and that is the latest. There was no announcement in the Press whatsoever.

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe.
