{"id":39859,"date":"2021-05-07T19:09:05","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T17:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/?p=39859"},"modified":"2021-05-07T18:44:21","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T16:44:21","slug":"victims-of-police-torture-granted-5-000-bail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/victims-of-police-torture-granted-5-000-bail","title":{"rendered":"Victims Of Police Torture Granted $5 000 Bail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>MDC Alliance activists Legwani Mavhunga and Munyaradzi Mafararikwa were on Friday granted $5 000 bail each by High Court judge Justice Webster Chinamhora.<\/p>\n<p>Mavhunga and Mafararikwa were arrested for allegedly obstructing people and vehicles in Harare and were tortured while in police detention.<\/p>\n<p>The two men, who have been in remand prison for more than two weeks, are being represented by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR). ZLHR posted on Twitter:<\/p>\n<p>JUST IN: We have just got RTGS$5 000 bail for Mavhunga &amp; Mafararikwa granted by Justice Chinhamora. Thank you @JitiWebster for rescuing these 2 victims of police torture.<\/p>\n<p>Mavhunga &amp; Mafararikwa were arrested for allegedly obstructing people &amp; vehicles in Harare &amp; tortured while in police detention.<\/p>\n<p>Mavhunga and Mafararikwa were arrested for standing in solidarity with MDC Alliance vice-chairperson, Job Sikhala who was appearing in court for the commencement of his trial on inciting public violence in the aftermath of the foiled 31 July 2020 anti-corruption protests.<\/p>\n<p>In a Twitter post on the day (16 April 2021) the duo was tortured by police, a human rights lawyer, Doug Coltart said:<\/p>\n<p>Please spare a thought and a prayer this evening for Legwani Mavhunga who was tortured while in police custody, arrested for showing solidarity at court for Job Sikhala.
