Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>An MDC Alliance councillor escaped death by a whisker following a savage machete attack Monday night in Chinhoyi\u2019s Mzari suburb.<\/p>\n

Ishmael Mudyavanhu who is Chinhoyi Municipality Ward 10 Councillor sustained a deep gash on the head from the attack.<\/p>\n

Mudyavanhu was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants and left for dead as he walked home around 9 AM after escorting a visiting relative.<\/p>\n

MDC Alliance Mashonaland West chairman, Ralph Magunje Wednesday confirmed the incident to NewZimbabwe.com. Said Magunje:<\/p>\n

I received the news of the attack on councillor Mudyavanhu this morning (Thursday), but l am yet to get full details of what actually happened.<\/p>\n

An MDC Alliance councillor who preferred anonymity told the publication that Mudyavanhu was attacked about 100 metres from his home. The councillor is quoted as saying:<\/p>\n

At around 9 pm, Mudyavanhu escorted his younger brother who had visited his family in Mzari low-density suburb. As he walked back, about 100 metres from his home, three unidentified men pounced.<\/p>\n

One of them struck him on the head with a machete and he fell to the ground. The other two attackers joined and continued bashing him.<\/p>\n

The assailants only fled after being flashed by the lights of an approaching car.<\/p>\n

reported sources as saying the attack could be politically motivated as the councillor had earlier received threats on his life from an unnamed individual over an undisclosed matter.<\/p>\n

Mudyavanhu is serving his first term as a councillor after dislodging former Chinhoyi deputy mayor Derrick Matapure (ZANU PF) in the 2018 harmonised elections.<\/p>\n
