Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum is providing legal support to villagers in Murehwa who are facing eviction from communal lands where they have resided for nearly 15 years.<\/p>\n

The village head, Gladmore Chifamba, is believed to be evicting the families from the land with the intention of combining their fields into his personal farm.<\/p>\n

Freddy Sumburero and Nicholas Mugabe were summoned to Mutawatatwa Police Station for questioning on charges of occupying and farming on Chifamba\u2019s land and approached the Forum for legal support.<\/p>\n

Chifamba has been summoned to appear in court today to answer charges of contempt of the local chief\u2019s court.<\/p>\n

Chief Nyajinhi, ruled at his court in February 2021 that Chifamba was the lawful owner of the land where Sumburero resides. Said Sumburero:<\/p>\n

I served village head Chifamba\u2019s father who was then the village head for four years as his secretary. In 2016 the late village head allocated me this piece of land where I have lived and farmed freely until Gladmore returned to the village upon his father\u2019s death whereupon he claimed to own the land. There was not much relief for me as the local chief is his brother and is supporting him.<\/p>\n

Mugabe and four other villagers who were also allocated land by the late village head Chifamba are already in possession of a High Court order obtained in 2020 that designates them as the lawful occupants of the disputed land.<\/p>\n

However, Gladmore is ignoring the High Court order and making efforts to evict the villagers.<\/p>\n

The Forum lawyer, Nyasha Machirori is representing the villagers in their fight to save their homes and fields from greed.<\/p>\n
