Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The government is pressing ahead with the construction of a mausoleum for the late former president Robert Mugabe two years after Mugabe was buried at his rural home in Zvimba in a heavily reinforced grave.<\/p>\n

Mugabe\u2019s family blocked the government from burying him at the Heroes\u2019 Acre, saying the former Zanu PF leader refused to be buried at the shrine.<\/p>\n

In May, Chief Zvimba\u2019s court ruled that Mugabe\u2019s remains had to be exhumed after charging former first lady Grace Mugabe with violating traditional norms by burying her husband at their homestead.<\/p>\n

Mugabe\u2019s family says the alleged resumption in the construction of the mausoleum suggests that the government influenced Chief Zvimba to order a reburial of the late veteran leader.<\/p>\n

They believe the government was eager to see Mugabe\u2019s remains exhumed and reburied at the National Heroes Acre. Said one of Mugabe\u2019s relatives, who requested to remain anonymous:<\/p>\n

The construction is ongoing without the family\u2019s knowledge and this has raised suspicion that the government is up to something.<\/p>\n

It confirms they are behind the chief\u2019s actions to call for the exhumation of the body<\/p>\n

Mugabe\u2019s nephew, Leo, who is the family spokesperson, said he was not aware of the continued construction of the mausoleum. Leo said:<\/p>\n

We have nothing to do with that.<\/p>\n

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe said the construction of the mausoleum was being handled by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.<\/p>\n

Mugabe\u2019s children, Bona, Bellarmine Chatunga and Tinotenda Robert (Jnr) in June appealed against Chief Zvimba\u2019s ruling, saying he acted outside his jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

The case is yet to be heard at the Chinhoyi magistrates\u2019 court.<\/p>\n

President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s government has consistently denied accusations that it is behind attempts to exhume Mugabe\u2019s remains.<\/p>\n
