{"id":47244,"date":"2021-09-27T18:13:28","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T16:13:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/?p=47244"},"modified":"2021-09-27T17:51:46","modified_gmt":"2021-09-27T15:51:46","slug":"china-assistance-to-zimbabwe-is-not-in-exchange-for-natural-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/china-assistance-to-zimbabwe-is-not-in-exchange-for-natural-resources","title":{"rendered":"China: Assistance To Zimbabwe Is Not In Exchange For Natural Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The People\u2019s Republic of China has denied allegations that it was assisting Zimbabwe in exchange for natural resources like gold and diamonds.<\/p>\n<p>This comes at the backdrop of growing criticism of China\u2019s environmentally unfriendly mining practices across the Southern African country.<\/p>\n<p>China is accused of extending loans and making generous donations to Zimbabwe to clear the path for Chinese companies to exploit the country\u2019s natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Chinese mining companies have set up operations across the country \u2013 digging for anything from coal, gold, chrome, diamonds through to palladium.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after donating 500 000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine on Sunday, China\u2019s ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun claimed \u201clately in Zimbabwe, some elements are once again hatching a smear campaign against Chinese investments in Zimbabwe.\u201d Shaochun insisted, speaking at the Harare International Airport:<\/p>\n<p>I would like to reiterate that China\u2019s assistance to and cooperation with Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole is the most transparent.<\/p>\n<p>There are no political strings or economic process tags attached. It\u2019s never offered to Zimbabwe in exchange for natural resources or with natural resources as collateral.<\/p>\n<p>Shauchun added that Western countries \u201ccannot share the time-tested friendship between China and Zimbabwe,\u201d accusing them of \u201cwatching from the sidelines with their arms folded, paying lip service, and maintaining their illegal, unilateral sanctions at such a life and death moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China says it has donated over 1.25 billion vaccine doses to over 100 countries since the pandemic outbreak, as it chides western countries for hoarding vaccines to give their populations.<\/p>\n<p>China is currently constructing Zimbabwe\u2019s new parliament building, upgrading the coal-powered Hwange Power Station and expanding the Victoria Falls International Airport and Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.<\/p>\n<p>More: ZimLive<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Zimbabwe.
