{"id":47858,"date":"2021-10-08T19:00:03","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T17:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\/?p=47858"},"modified":"2021-10-08T18:51:20","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T16:51:20","slug":"mdc-alliance-mps-boycott-president-mnangagwas-sona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/mdc-alliance-mps-boycott-president-mnangagwas-sona","title":{"rendered":"MDC Alliance MPs Boycott President Mnangagwa\u2019s SONA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/zimbabwe\">Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The few remaining opposition MDC Alliance MPs Thursday boycotted President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Parliament Building in central Harare.<\/p>\n<p>MDC Alliance MPs have since 2018 been boycotting Mnangagwa SONA addresses and other parliamentary events he attends saying he is illegitimate.<\/p>\n<p>MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa, claims the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) connived with ZANU PF and rigged the results of the 2018 presidential election in Mnangagwa\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n<p>However, over 60 MDC Alliance MPs have been recalled from Parliament after a rival MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora said they were no longer party members after the legislators showed their allegiance to Chamisa.<\/p>\n<p>Other remaining lawmakers from the opposition have crossed the floor to join Mwonzora in fear of being recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, MDC-T legislators attended Thursday\u2019s SONA which Mnangagwa addressed live virtually from State House.<\/p>\n<p>However, the few MDC Alliance MPs who were not present in the House of Assembly included Job Sikhala, Innocent Gonese, Rusty Markham, Joanna Mamombe, and Anele Ndebele.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, House of Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda ruled MDC Alliance MPs who had that year boycotted Mnangagwa\u2019s SONA would not receive their sitting allowances for five months.<\/p>\n<p>However, the matter was thrown away after the opposition MPs filed an appeal at the High Court.<\/p>\n<p>More: NewZimbabwe<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Zimbabwe.
