Africa-Press<\/a> – Zimbabwe<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>A grenade exploded at a Bulawayo school during a routine burning of grass and rubbish recently, with local councillors calling for an investigation into the origins of the explosive.<\/p>\n

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) bomb disposal unit and the Bulawayo Fire Brigade had to be called to Ntshamathe Primary School in Old Magwegwe following the explosion.<\/p>\n

According to the latest report by the Bulawayo City Council, the incident took place two months ago. Reads the report:<\/p>\n

The school workers had cleared the school ground at Ntshamathe Primary School and in the process of burning the grass and rubbish, the fire went out of control and spread to the rest of the ground.<\/p>\n

While the fire was burning a very loud explosion was heard from the grounds and a dark cloud was observed with the trembling of nearby houses.<\/p>\n

It was later discovered after the ZNA bomb disposal unit had attended that a grenade had exploded.<\/p>\n

This is one of the risks that our fire-fighters face in the process of fighting bush fires.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the incident during a full council meeting last Wednesday, Ward Four Councillor, Silas Chigora (MDC Alliance), said there was a need to engage the army to check public places and assure the public of their safety. Said Chigora:<\/p>\n

This happened in a school, which in itself is scary. The question is are we really safe in Bulawayo? Where did this grenade come from, how did it end up on the school grounds?<\/p>\n

Is it a grenade from the times of the liberation struggle? Something really has to be done to make sure that our public places are safe.<\/p>\n

If possible let us invite the army to generally go through all the schools and public places. We really have to assure the public\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n

Recently, a suspected wartime bomb exploded at a homestead in Lupane, blowing off the roof of a house and damaging three huts at neighbouring homesteads.<\/p>\n

The blast occurred at the homestead of Lupane Women\u2019s Centre director Hildegard Mufukare along the old Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road in Mqoqi Village, Shabula area under Chief Mabhikwa on Sunday last week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
