Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) says it intercepted and seized more than 40 tonnes of maize belonging to Norton MP Temba Mliswa (Independent).<\/p>\n

The maize consignment was reportedly destined for private buyers in violation of Statutory Instrument 97 of 2021 which says maize and soya beans can only be sold to registered players.<\/p>\n

GMB Chief executive officer Rockie Mutenha said they intercepted Mliswa\u2019s maize in Selous recently and had documentary evidence on its destination.<\/p>\n

Mutenha was speaking before Parliament\u2019s Portfolio Committee on Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development this Monday.<\/p>\n

He was among GMB officials who were in Parliament at the invitation of the committee chaired by Gokwe Nembudziya MP Justice Mayor Wadyajena for a post-budget consultative meeting. He said:<\/p>\n

The record that we have is very correct, that Hon Mliswa was caught by our staff delivering or taking maize to Selous, Chegutu, that there was no movement (of grain) permit at all, and we have documentary evidence if the committee wants that information and where it was going.<\/p>\n

That is why up to now he has not even sued me because he knew that what he was saying was not correct. And the matter is before the courts right now.<\/p>\n

Mliswa had denied the allegations claiming he was framed. Posting on Twitter, Mliswa had threatened to sue the GMB officials.<\/p>\n

According to existing regulations, no one is allowed to sell maize other than GMB unless if one is a contractor registered by the Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA).<\/p>\n

Those found on the wrong side of the law risk losing the maize and being made to pay a fine three times the marketing value of the maize or soya beans in their possession.<\/p>\n
