Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>SPAR Zimbabwe is offering a reusable SPAR carrier bag made from recycled SPAR UHT Milk cartons.<\/p>\n

The carrier bag is produced entirely by hand by the Clean Marondera (CM) group, a community-based voluntary organisation working with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), Marondera Municipality, and the Marondera community.<\/p>\n

The cartons are taken from recycling collection points, cut, flattened, and cleaned thoroughly to remove any milk remains.<\/p>\n

They are then dried, fitted and crocheted together using hands. Each bag uses nine cartons.<\/p>\n

SPAR Zimbabwe launched the initiative in conjunction with EMA earlier in the year, as part of its ongoing drive to address the problem of litter.<\/p>\n

They are currently working with a local manufacturer to reduce the costs of producing paper carrier bags locally.<\/p>\n

Shamiso Pfumayaramba, the coordinator of SPAR Zimbabwe\u2019s CSR portfolio had this to say:<\/p>\n

Every time you choose to refuse a plastic bag, you are helping to reduce the use of plastic in the world. It\u2019s a tiny step, but every step in the right direction counts.<\/p>\n

\u2026 People are keen to do their part to help reduce plastic pollution, but often the much lower price of a plastic carrier bag is the deciding factor in our current economy.<\/p>\n

We hope to find an affordable, plastic-free alternative soon. People want to be involved.<\/p>\n

Saying no to single-use plastic is a small but tangible way for them to make an active choice for the environment.<\/p>\n

Last month EMA said the use of plastic carrier bags will be banned by December 2022, with retail outlets urged to find environment-friendly alternatives.<\/p>\n

The ban is meant to protect the environment from plastic bag pollution as they are not biodegradable.<\/p>\n
