Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Piers Pigou, a consultant for International Crisis Group, and for Cabo Ligado Project has said Zimbabwe\u2019s by-elections scheduled for the 26th of March will be a battle between opposition MDC outfits led by Nelson Chamisa on one hand and the other led by Douglas Mwonzora.<\/p>\n

He speaks after President Emmerson Mnangagwa has proclaimed that the by-elections to fill 133 vacant local government and parliamentary seats would be held on 26 March 2022 while 26 January 2022, has been proclaimed as the date on which the nomination courts shall sit.<\/p>\n

26 March will see a raft of by-elections in mainly opposition strongholds. It will finally test the resourcing strength of the MDC Alliance (Chamisa crew) against the MDC-T (Mwonzora crew) which claim they are the legitimate opposition. What party name will MDC Alliance run on?<\/p>\n

Most of the seats became vacant after the MDC-T led by Mwonzora recalled MDC Alliance officials accusing them of ceasing to represent the interests of the MDC-T, \u201cthe party that gave them the ticket to contest the 2018 elections.\u201d<\/p>\n

The recalls followed a 2019 Supreme Court ruling that declared that Chamisa was not the legitimate leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party founded by the late Morgan Tsvangirai which contested the 2018 elections.<\/p>\n

The court ruled that Chamisa\u2019s ascendancy to power was illegal after he violated the party\u2019s own constitution.<\/p>\n

Chamisa and his sympathisers refused to accept the outcome of the court process and accused the ruling ZANU PF of influencing the outcome to destroy the main o[position in the land.<\/p>\n
