{"id":5421,"date":"2019-03-11T21:08:37","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T21:08:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/zimbabwe\/?p=5421"},"modified":"2019-03-11T21:08:37","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T21:08:37","slug":"south-africa-plans-border-drone-patrols-to-keep-illegal-immigrants-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.cc\/zimbabwe\/all-news\/south-africa-plans-border-drone-patrols-to-keep-illegal-immigrants-out","title":{"rendered":"South Africa plans border drone patrols to keep illegal immigrants out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SA may soon turn to drones to help it to protect its porous borders from illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>Defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said on Sunday the country could consider using the unmanned aerial vehicles in an effort to keep the country\u2019s borders safe.<\/p>\n<p>She was speaking to the media at the ANC headquarters as part of the party\u2019s manifesto briefing on peace and stability.<\/p>\n<p>Mapisa-Nqakula said the SA government was always quizzed about whether it had enough personnel to deploy to the borders but it was now time to innovate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"41DiZkgE\">\n<div class=\"in-post-div\">\u201cWe have reached a point where we believe we should not be moaning about the number of companies (military units), the numbers of warm bodies, you have on the borderline.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe should now \u2026 look at innovative ways, look at technology. For instance, SA is a big producer of unmanned aerial vehicles and we are now looking into that,\u201d said Mapisa-Nqakula.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think that through this, we will be able to win the war against illegal migration; we will be able to win the war against porous borders,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mapisa-Nqakula had been responding to a question from the media about the ANC government\u2019s commitment to deal with illegal immigrants who are often linked to criminal activities.<\/p>\n<p>Going into the May 8 elections, illegal immigration has become a hot issue especially in Gauteng where the DA wants to topple the ruling ANC.<\/p>\n<p>But often those who raise the issue of undocumented migrants being linked to crime are accused of xenophobia.<\/p>\n<p>City of Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has been among those at the forefront leading the charge against undocumented immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>Last week Gauteng premier David Makhura also joined those linking foreign nationals with crime, saying there were specific nationalities associated with certain crimes.<\/p>\n<p>He further named Nigerian nationals as being involved in drug dealings in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do we have so many drug dens that are operated by Nigerians in this country? How does this happen? We\u2019ve got to solve that problem and we also have to make it a problem with Nigeria,\u201d Makhura said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at Sunday\u2019s briefing, ANC spokesperson Dakota Legoete said his party was not being xenophobic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody is welcomed to our country, so long as he comes through the proper channels of the law \u2026 equally everybody who comes to our country must not come to our country with the intention to do wrong, human trafficking, drugs, house robberies, cash heists,\u201d said Legoete.<\/p>\n<div class=\"in-post-div\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SA may soon turn to drones to help it to protect its porous borders from illegal immigrants.
