Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>The Progressive Teachers Union Zimbabwe (PTUZ) says teachers are not seeking a salary increase by the restoration of their pre-2018 salaries that were pegged in US dollars.<\/p>\n

PTUZ president Takavafira Zhou said the only remedy to the suffering of teachers is for the Government to restore the purchasing power parity of their salaries, that is, US$540 per month. Said Zhou:<\/p>\n

Teachers do not want an increase of their salaries but restoration of their US$540, no more no less. For all fellow teachers, it\u2019s now or never.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s engage a high gear and ensure that we make maximum gains within a short period so that we can get US$540 and travel to our schools to teach our students who are in essence future leaders of Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

Last week, teachers declared incapacitation and urged the Government to urgently address their grievances, saying they have no money to travel to their workplaces for the first term which commences this Monday.<\/p>\n

Zhou urged teachers to unite and reject an education system that makes them unable to afford fees at many schools in Zimbabwe. He added:<\/p>\n

To the Government, our message, as always, is a call for educational hygiene through the restoration of our status, dignity and lustre so that we play a pivotal role in the sustainable development of the nation.<\/p>\n

Any nation that does not respect its teachers is cursed. We are patriotic but you have overstretched us and we have reached our breaking point.<\/p>\n

We all the same hope you will listen to our professional advice, pay US$540 and bring harmony and productivity to schools.<\/p>\n

We are however budgeting for your resistance, but hope you will choose a win-win trajectory by restoring US$540 rather than a zero sum strategy of educational vandalism and threats as we do not eat threats.<\/p>\n
