Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>The Zimbabwe Diamond, Allied and Mineral Workers Union (ZDAMWU) says the 108% salary increase approved by the National Employment Council (NEC), Associated Mine Workers Union of Zimbabwe (AMWUZ) and the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe (CMZ) on 19 May is too little.<\/p>\n

ZDAMWU secretary-general, Justice Chinhema, on Monday said the salary increment is meaningless as long as it is in Zimbabwe dollars. Said Chinhema:<\/p>\n

Even if they negotiate 500% \u2014 as long it is in local currency it is a non-starter because the only solution is a United States dollar salary.<\/p>\n

These guys take mine workers for fools. There is a need for a petition to challenge this.<\/p>\n

It did not come from the workers, and it\u2019s not for the workers. AMWUZ doesn\u2019t represent workers\u2019 interests.<\/p>\n

They have become part of the bourgeois class. Using the current official exchange rate, the minimum wage is US$360.<\/p>\n

Under the recently approved salary structure, the lowest-paid mine worker will take home $93 074 up from $44 640 while the highest-paid mine worker will be getting $215 872 up from $103 535.<\/p>\n

However, Chinhema said mine workers in other African countries like Ghana earned US$700 minimum wage. He said:<\/p>\n

So the increase of the minimum wage is US$1 up to December 2022.<\/p>\n

Rates change every week and we doubt that by December we will still be alive.<\/p>\n

Cooking oil is now US$6 from US$3,50 for two litres. We need currency stability.<\/p>\n

The new salary structure is for the period 1 April to 31 December 2022.<\/p>\n
