Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Police in Bulawayo have urged members of the public to share their problems with others so that they can find help rather than resort to taking their own lives.<\/p>\n

This comes after a 37-year-old laboratory technician from Entumbane suburb committed suicide by hanging on Monday.<\/p>\n

The now-deceased, Kelvin Magenende, left a note saying that he had failed his family.<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Bulawayo Province, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident to Chronicle on Thursday. He said:<\/p>\n

Police in Bulawayo are investigating a case of sudden death by hanging which occurred in Entumbane Suburb, Bulawayo on the 27th of June.<\/p>\n

The deceased is a male adult aged 37 of Entumbane who was employed as a laboratory technician by the Ministry of Health and Child Care at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).<\/p>\n

On the 27th of June 2022 in the afternoon, a nine-year-old male juvenile who is the son of the now-deceased came back from school and found his father hanging from the roof truss.<\/p>\n

The juvenile ran to a neighbour whom he told what he had seen. The neighbour advised the boy to go to the police.<\/p>\n

The boy then made a police report. At the scene, police found a suicide note in which the man said he loved his wife and she should take care of their two children since he had failed to cope with the situation. Added Ins Ncube:<\/p>\n

Preliminary investigations revealed that the now deceased had domestic disputes with his wife. The body was taken to UBH for post-mortem.<\/p>\n

According to last year\u2019s World Health Organisation data on suicide, Zimbabwe has a suicide rate of 14 deaths per 100 000 people.<\/p>\n

The report showed that Zimbabwean men are more prone to taking their own lives compared to women.<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe was ranked 34th on a list of 182 countries, and the fifth in Africa, behind Lesotho, Eswatini, South Africa and Botswana.<\/p>\n

The country has experienced economic challenges over the past two decades characterised by high rates of unemployment, rising inflation, shortages of fuel, medicines, and running water, among other basics, as well as a repressive political system.<\/p>\n

This could be a contributory factor to depression, despair and hopelessness which may push people t commit suicide.<\/p>\n
