Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Norton legislator (Independent) Temba Mliswa has said it\u2019s quite shocking that the Patriotic Bill sailed through Parliament faster than legislation meant to take resource leakages and corruption in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

Mliswa who is also the chairperson for the African Parliamentarians Network against Corruption Zimbabwe chapter said:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s amazing that a Patriot Bill sails through Parliament faster than legislation which will save Zimbabwe\u2019s resources and tackle corruption.<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe has over the years been ranked among the countries with high cases of corruption.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a late event to commemorate the African Anti-Corruption Day in Harare on Tuesday, Mliswa said:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a secret that corruption has taken over in terms of sanctions that have made us more disciplined to account for our resources. There is no good governance which protects the resources we have, and we are endowed with resources. The deals which are structured favour the investor and not the foreign person.<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe is reportedly losing billions of dollars per year through smuggling.<\/p>\n

In July last year, Tashinga Masinire a former driver of Zimbabwe Miners Federation President Henrietta Rushwaya was arrested at O R Tambo International Airport, South Africa carrying gold worth US$783 000 which he transported from Zimbabwe via Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.<\/p>\n

Rushwaya herself had in October 2020 been arrested after trying to smuggle 6 KGs of gold out of the country.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Patriotic Bill which was proposed in August 2020 prohibits citizens from conniving with hostile foreign governments to harm the country.<\/p>\n

Critics say the bill will be used as justification to violate human rights as it gives authorities permission to snoop into private communications between citizens and officials of foreign governments.<\/p>\n
