The Minister of Information and Publicity, Monica Mutsvangwa on Monday issued a statement dismissing social media reports that Zimbabwe faces the threat of another Tropical Cyclone just a week after Cyclone Idai happend\u00a0 in Chimanimani.<\/p>\n
While the government has acknowledged that a cyclone had indeed formed in the Indian Ocean, the Minister said that there is no threat whatsoever for Zimbabwe since the storm is far away from the mainland. The statement reads in part:<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting would like to appeal to the people of Zimbabwe to follow the proper and official source of authentic and authoritative weather information from the Zimbabwe Meteorological Services who work together with bona fide countries weather bureaus under the auspices of the United Nations.<\/p>\n
Social media is awash with reports that suggest that the sub-Saharan continent, including Zimbabwe, will suffer yet another cyclone in the near future.<\/p>\n
Any information from purported international weather forecast that indicates that cyclone Joanina is gathering momentum in the Indian Ocean and will affect Zimbabwe is not correct.<\/p>\n
Whilst cyclone Joanina is indeed a reality, it is based in the Indian Ocean, far away from the African mainland.<\/p>\n
Cyclones that affect our part of the African continent mostly originate in the Mozambican Channel.<\/p>\n
Zimbabwe\u2019s Meteorological Service is continually monitoring the weather developments in the Indian Ocean including Cyclone Joanina and will keep the nation informed through mainstream media and the national broadcaster.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
