Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>A prominent Zimbabwean journalist, Haru Mutasa, who works for the Qatari-based television network, Al Jazeera, has raised concerns about the high crime rate in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Mutasa set the cat among the pigeons on Sunday night after she claimed that Zimbabwe was \u201cthe safer nation\u201d of the two.<\/p>\n

Posting on Twitter, Mutasa said Zimbabwe is beautiful and \u201cdoes not have the high crime rate\u201d seen in South Africa.<\/p>\n

She also claimed that some South Africans \u201cwrongly believe the rest of Africa is invading them\u201d. Wrote Mutasa:<\/p>\n

Ouch South Africans \u2013 there I said it\u2026 Compared to #Zimbabwe your crime is on another level\u2026 Fight me all you want, you know am right<\/p>\n

But we still love you \u2013 our lovely neighbours across the border, who wrongly believe the rest of Africa is invading them\u2026 Oops \u2013 I said that\u2026<\/p>\n

Besides upsetting South African social media users, Mutasa\u2019s tweet caught the attention of Clayson Monyela, the Head of Public Diplomacy at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).<\/p>\n

Monyela noted that Mutasa had no statistical evidence to support her claims and also suggested that Zimbabwean nationals are contributing to the high crime rate in South Africa. Said Monyela:<\/p>\n

What are you saying Haru? I\u2019ll be a good diplomat and resist the temptation to ask you to produce credible stats from Zimbabwe to back up this tweet.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll also not ask if some of your nationals are contributing to the crime in SA. Do better!<\/p>\n
