Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>Zimbabwe on Monday voted against a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution for Russia to pay compensation for the damage caused by its invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n

In presenting the resolution, Ukrainian ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya insisted that Russia should be held accountable for its violation of international law. He said:<\/p>\n

Seventy-seven years ago, the Soviet Union demanded and received reparations, calling it a moral right of a country that has suffered war and occupation.<\/p>\n

Today (Monday), Russia, which claims to be the successor of the 20th century\u2019s tyranny, is doing everything it can to avoid paying the price for its own war and occupation, trying to escape accountability for the crimes it is committing.<\/p>\n

Ninety-four (94) countries voted in favour of the resolution while 14 were against and 73 abstained.<\/p>\n

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that calls for Russia to pay war reparations to Ukraine, for loss or injury, arising from the invasion.<\/p>\n

The 14 States that voted against were:<\/p>\n

1). Zimbabwe,<\/p>\n

2). Bahamas,<\/p>\n

3). Belarus,<\/p>\n

4). Central African Republic,<\/p>\n

5). China,<\/p>\n

6). Cuba,<\/p>\n

7). Eritrea,<\/p>\n

8). Ethiopia,<\/p>\n

9). Iran,<\/p>\n

10). Mali,<\/p>\n

11). Nicaragua,<\/p>\n

12). North Korea,<\/p>\n

13). Russia and<\/p>\n

14). Syria.<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe, which claims to be a friend of all and an enemy of no one, has been abstaining from voting in most UN General Assembly resolutions on Russia.<\/p>\n

a). Was among 35 countries that abstained from the UNGA vote in October 2022 which called on countries not to recognise the four Ukraine regions annexed by Russia.<\/p>\n

b). In March, Zimbabwe abstained from voting against Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

c). In April, Zimbabwe opposed another UNGA resolution to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n
