Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>FIFA president Gianni Infantino has castigated western countries and accused them of moral hypocrisy.<\/p>\n

In a speech delivered on the eve of the World Cup, the 52-year-old Swiss-Italian football administrator defended Qatar\u2019s migrant workers\u2019 policy and labelled those saying there were \u201cpaid fake fans\u201d in Qatar as racist.<\/p>\n

Qatar has been criticized by the west over the alleged ill-treatment of gay people and the deaths of migrant workers, but Infantino said critics were in no position \u201cto give moral lessons to people\u201d.<\/p>\n

Infantino delivered a monologue that lasted nearly an hour in Doha, in what was supposed to be a 45-minute Q&A with the media this Saturday. He said:<\/p>\n

Of course, I am not Qatari, I am not an Arab, I am not African, I am not gay, and I am not disabled.<\/p>\n

But I feel like it because I know what it means to be discriminated against, to be bullied, as a foreigner in a foreign country.<\/p>\n

As a child, I was bullied \u2013 because I had red hair and freckles, plus I was Italian so imagine. I went into my room and I cried.<\/p>\n

I feel for the FIFA and Supreme Committee staff. They want to deliver here. I am proud to have this FIFA sign on my jacket. It will be the best World Cup ever. Qatar is ready.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands of women and men from developing countries who\u2019d like to offer their services abroad in order to help and give a future to their families back home.<\/p>\n

Qatar is actually offering them this opportunity. They come here, and earn 10 times more than what they earn in their home country.<\/p>\n

For what we Europeans have been doing around the world in the last 3 000 years we should be apologising for the next 3 000 years before starting to give moral lessons to people.<\/p>\n

How many of these European or Western business companies who earn millions from Qatar, billions, and how many of them have addressed migrant workers\u2019 rights with the authorities?<\/p>\n

None of them, because if you change the legislation it means less profit. But we did, and FIFA generates much less than any of these companies from Qatar.<\/p>\n

Infantino also commented on reports that fans were paid to support different nations at the World Cup. He said:<\/p>\n

The world is divided enough, we are organising a World Cup, not a war. We organise a World Cup where people who have many problems want to come and enjoy. Look at the city, it\u2019s beautiful. People are happy to celebrate.<\/p>\n

They were happy when the teams come and they go to see them, and what do I read? These people don\u2019t look English, they shouldn\u2019t cheer for England because they look like Indians. What is that?<\/p>\n

Can somebody who looks like an Indian not cheer for England, Spain, or Germany? You know what this is.<\/p>\n

This is racism, this is pure racism. We have to stop that because everyone in the world has the right to cheer for who they want.<\/p>\n

The 2022 World Cup kicks off on Sunday, 20 November 2022, with hosts Qatar taking on Equador at 6 PM Central African Time (CAT).<\/p>\n

In the following match, England takes on Iran on Monday at 3 PM before Senegal hosts the Netherlands at 6 PM.<\/p>\n

The United States of America then clashes with Wales at 9 PM to wrap up the Monday fixture.<\/p>\n
