Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. <\/strong><\/span>The government says it will train 5 000 Science and Mathematics teachers in the next three years to address the teacher shortage problem.<\/p>\n

Umzingwane MP Levi Mayihlome (ZANU PF) told the National Assembly that the shortage of Mathematics and Science teachers could be contributing to a decline in the pass rate in Sciences.<\/p>\n

Mayihlome claimed Umzingwane District in Matabeleland South Province has more than 45 vacancies for Science teachers, but only two posts were filled.<\/p>\n

He then asked the Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation and Technology Development Minister Amon Murwira about the measures that the Government is implementing to address the problem.<\/p>\n

In response, Murwira said several teachers\u2019 colleges such as Mkoba Teachers\u2019 College; Masvingo Teachers\u2019 College, and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic are training Science and Mathematics teachers. He said:<\/p>\n

So, we have been able to enroll 600 teachers for Science only at Mkoba Teachers\u2019 College, at Mary Mount Teachers\u2019 College, at Masvingo Teachers\u2019 College and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic which was never there before.<\/p>\n

We have also bolstered the Science teaching programme at Mutare Teachers\u2019 College, Hillside Teachers\u2019 College and Belvedere Technical Teachers\u2019 College.<\/p>\n

So, the response has been such that last year in 2022, we graduated our first crop of secondary Science teachers.<\/p>\n

We are looking at having 5 000 secondary Science teachers trained by 2025 and there are steps that we are taking.<\/p>\n

Murwira said at least 600 Science teachers graduated in 2022 and the government has started deploying them to various stations across the country.<\/p>\n
